HP Toner Cartridge Test - Half Drum Test

Before even attempting this test open the flap on the toner cartridge to expose the drum surface. If the drum itself appears to be damaged the toner cartridge is probably bad. A useful troubleshooting technique for all Laser Printers is run a test print using the manual tray - and open the top cover as it is printing, then examine the paper at different stages in printing. If it's good until it leaves the fuser the fuser is probably bad. If it's bad on the paper but good on the drum check the transfer roller or high voltage power supply. If it's bad on the drum it is probably the toner cartridge but in a rare case could be the formatter or scanner assembly.

It may take several prints to get the paper to stop where you want it, but this can be a good tool for helping isolate image defects. This can be a messy test since the toner is unfused and always jams when the cover is opened. Be careful when removing the paper that has jammed.
